Jim Loken
I am currently working towards my Ph.D. as a graduate student in the Department of Plant Sciences at North Dakota State University. My research focus is the development of a weed control system for North Dakota onion growers. To investigate this weed control problem, I conduct experiments in the greenhouse and at various field locations across North Dakota. I also attend class in the fall and spring to aid in my development as a weed scientist.

The positive and professional environment that I experienced as an Agricultural Systems Management (ASM) student played a major roll in my decision to attend graduate school and gave me excellent preparation for graduate studies. Courses I took in mechanized and precision agriculture in the ASM program encouraged my critical thinking and gave me a broad agricultural background. The flexibility of the program allowed me to tailor the classes I took toward my agricultural interests, exposing me to weed science.

With the ultimate goal of becoming a university professor, it was the positive experiences I had with my ASM advisor, ASM professors, ASM staff, and NDSU as a whole that encouraged me in this career path.
