Materials:

Students will need an e-mail account, a calculator with its manual, and a folder or three-ring notebook to organize notes and handouts. Students will also need portable media storage devices (USB flash drives, 1.44 MB floppy disks, CDs, DVDs, etc.) to keep duplicate copies of their files.

Goals:

After completing this course, students should be able to: 1) use computer software for problem solving, reporting, and graphical communication tasks; and 2) continue to learn how to use spreadsheets, AutoCAD, and word processors to solve a variety of new problems in their studies and work, especially in areas not covered in this course.

Prerequisites by Topic: CSci 114 or 116.

Topics:

1.	Technical correspondence, tabular and graphical presentation of data, and report writing.
2.	Problem solving with a spreadsheet, including use of formulas, sequential calculations, back solving, dimensions and units, graphing, two-way tables, descriptive statistics, linear regression, database functions, and other topics as time permits.
3.	Computer-aided design using AutoCAD.

Computer Usage:

Students will use computers for most or all of the homework assignments.

Laboratory Projects:

Approximately three-fourths of the class periods will be spent in computer clusters for hands-on exercises, assignments, etc.

11:00 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Place:

ABEN 208. Computer clusters will be used extensively. Refer to the schedule for class locations.

Grading:

The course grade will be based on four categories of work in the course: homework assignments, quizzes, two tests, and a final examination. Each student's final grade in the course will be determined by a weighted point total, with weights for each category of work as shown in table 1 below. The weighted point total will be divided by the maximum possible weighted point total for the course to determine the grade percentage. The grade percentage will be converted to a letter grade using the following straight grading scale: 90 # A # 100%, 80 # B < 90%, 70 # C < 80%, 60 # D < 70%, and 0% # F < 60%. The scale may be lower, but will not be higher.

Homework due dates will be given with the assignments. Late homework will be accepted with a 10% penalty per NDSU class day. Homework must be received by the instructor before 5 p.m. to be credited to the day it is received.

Missed tests, exams, and quizzes will receive zero points unless missed for an acceptable reason, such as a medical or family emergency or co-curricular activities, with advance notification where possible. Extracurricular activities, vacations, hunting trips, work, farming activities, etc. are not acceptable reasons for missing tests or quizzes. If you miss class, the instructor will provide handouts upon your return if asked; you are responsible for obtaining notes from a classmate.
